All over the country, working people are rising up in the wake of the latest brutal killing of our brother George Floyd at the hands of the police. Here at home we remember Sam DuBose and Timothy Thomas. The Cincinnati Interfaith Workers Center stands with the Black community and their allies in rising up against systemic racism and police brutality. We support the demands of black leaders all over the country in calling for justice for George Floyd, Breanna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless more.

We also call on our union family to stand with our Black brothers and sisters, to refuse to be complicit in the act of silencing the voice of the movement, and to join anti-racist labor efforts. As has been said by many, there is no room for racism in the house of labor. It is not enough to condemn these racist murders, which we do. We must also condemn the way police unions systematically undermine trade unionism whenever they deploy union rights for amoral ends, which happens every single time a police officer ends yet another black life unjustly.

Police conduct in response to the protests nationwide, including in our state and our own city of Cincinnati, has been disgraceful. We encourage our members and allies to continue to show up to the peaceful demonstrations that are taking place, to support the movement for Black lives, and to hold our leaders accountable for their inaction. If you are not able to show up physically, we encourage you to take other steps to support such as educating your community, amplifying voices of color, and donating funds and needed supplies to those on the front lines, such as by supporting the Cincinnati Bail fund and our sister center CTUL in Minneapolis.

We will not remain silent in the face of racist violence against our communities - whether that is in the form of police killing with impunity or management willful disregard of dignity and safety on the job. 

Solidarity forever

En todo el país, los trabajadores se están levantando a raíz del asesinato brutal de nuestro hermano George Floyd a manos de la policía.  

Aquí también recordamos a Sam DuBose y Timothy Thomas.  

El Centro Interreligioso de Trabajadores de Cincinnati (CIWC) está con la comunidad afro-americana y sus aliados por levantarse en contra del racismo sistémico y la brutalidad policial.  Apoyamos las demandas de los líderes afro-americanos de todo el país al pedir justicia para George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery y tantos más.

También pedimos a nuestra familia sindical que se ponga de pie con nuestros hermanos y hermanas afro-americanas, rechazando ser cómplices del acto de silenciar la voz del movimiento y a unirse a los esfuerzos de trabajo antirracistas.  Como muchos han dicho, no hay ningún espacio para el racismo dentro del movimiento sindical.  No es suficiente con condenar estos asesinatos racistas. También debemos condenar la forma en que los sindicatos de la policía debilitan sistemáticamente al movimiento obrero cada vez que hacen uso de los derechos sindicales para fines inmorales, que es lo que ocurre cada vez que un oficial de la policía da muerte a un afro-americano injustamente.

La conducta policial en respuesta a las protestas en todo el país, incluyendo a nuestro estado y nuestra propia ciudad de Cincinnati, ha sido vergonzosa.  Alentamos a nuestros miembros y aliados a que continúen asistiendo a las manifestaciones pacíficas que se están llevando a cabo, que apoyen el movimiento por las vidas de los afro-americanos y que exijan responsabilidad a nuestros líderes por su falta de acción. Si no puede presentarse físicamente, lo alentamos a que tome otras medidas para apoyar, como educar a su comunidad, amplificar las voces de personas de color y donar fondos y suministros necesarios a las personas en primera línea, por ejemplo apoyando al Fondo de Fianzas de Cincinnati y a nuestro centro hermano CTUL en Minneapolis.

No nos quedaremos callados ante la violencia racista en contra de nuestras comunidades, ya sea en forma de asesinatos con impunidad por parte de la policía o por el desprecio deliberado de empleadores hacia la dignidad y la seguridad en el trabajo.
